Restoring Nature, Together

We’re on a mission to reverse the decline of wildlife and create a brighter future for Cumbria's natural environment. Together, we’re bringing nature back one wildflower meadow, hedgerow and re-wiggled river at a time.

Cumbria Connect:
Who We Are

Cumbria Connect is a groundbreaking collaboration between the RSPB, United Utilities, Lowther Estates and Natural England.

Funded by the Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme, we’re working together to restore nature across a vast 42,000 hectares of eastern Cumbria, encompassing the cherished Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.

We achieve this by collaborating with farmers, landowners and local communities to implement nature-friendly farming practices and create a network of bigger, better-connected habitats.

Join us on this exciting journey to restore Cumbria’s natural splendour and enhance biodiversity for generations to come.

What is nature
restoration?

Nature restoration is simply giving nature a helping hand. It helps heal areas damaged over time by human actions, such as draining wetlands, straightening rivers or through overgrazing.

The goal is to bring back a natural balance, allowing the ecosystem to function properly again. This will include planting native trees, restoring wetlands and reintroducing missing species.

At Cumbria Connect, our work embraces six guiding principles for nature restoration:

  1. Increase diversity, dispersal and disturbance
  2. Produce food that’s good for nature
  3. Trap and store more carbon
  4. Make space for water
  5. Grow an economy that celebrates and supports nature
  6. Celebrate the joy of nature

Healthy ecosystems provide cleaner air and water, improved flood control, better soil health and a boost to biodiversity. It’s a win-win for both nature and people.
